Washing Hair After a Hair Transplant

Washing hair correctly after surgery is one of the important stages for a successful transplant. This is when the healing process begins and the transplanted follicles become established, so it is very important to follow all the doctor’s instructions.

At The Clinic, patients receive detailed instructions on scalp washing during the dressing period and on the day after surgery. Our specialists demonstrate how to properly wash hair after a transplant so implants are not damaged and recovery is accelerated.

When can I wash my hair after a transplant?

Recommendations:

  • Start washing the scalp 36–48 hours after the procedure; ideally on day 2 post‑op.
  • During the first month, it is recommended to wash hair once a day.

Regular and gentle washing helps keep the scalp clean and promotes proper healing.

Use Recommended Shampoos

The shampoo used after transplantation should not contain sulfates or aggressive ingredients.

The Clinic’s doctor will select an appropriate shampoo taking into account:

  • scalp type
  • condition of the transplanted area
  • the patient’s individual characteristics

When washing the scalp:

  • the water should not be very hot or very cold
  • use lukewarm water
  • the water stream should be very gentle

During the first 14 days after surgery:

  • avoid using a showerhead directly on the scalp
  • it is preferable to pour water with your hand

This helps protect transplanted grafts from mechanical damage.

Drying Hair After a Transplant

The donor area and the transplanted area require different approaches to drying.

Recommendations:

  • Gently pat the transplanted area with a paper towel
  • Do not rub or press the transplants
  • The donor area can be dried with a regular towel

Use of a hairdryer, especially on a hot setting, is not recommended. It’s better to let the hair air‑dry naturally.
